The NDIS Application Process
Follow these five steps to apply for NDIS support and create your personalized plan
Check Your Eligibility
Ensure you meet the basic NDIS requirements
- Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible visa holder
- Under 65 years old when first applying
- Live in an NDIS trial site or current rollout area
- Have a permanent and significant disability
Gather Your Evidence
Collect documents that demonstrate your disability and support needs
- Medical reports and assessments
- Evidence of how your disability affects daily life
- Reports from health professionals
- Information about current supports and services
Submit Your Application
Complete and submit your NDIS access request
- Complete the access request form
- Provide all supporting documentation
- Submit via online portal, phone or in person
- Keep copies of all documents for your records
Access Decision
NDIA reviews your application and makes a decision
- Decision usually made within 21 days
- You'll receive written notification of the outcome
- If approved, you'll be contacted to arrange planning
- If not approved, you can request a review
- Problem-solving and decision making
Planning Meeting
Work with NDIA to create your personalized plan
- Discuss your goals and aspirations
- Identify supports and services needed
- Determine funding amounts for each support category
- Plan review scheduled (usually annually)
Disability Types Cover
0-6 years (Early Childhood)
Developmental delay or disability that significantly affects development
Early intervention services, family support, capacity building
7-64 years
Permanent and significant disability that affects daily activities
Daily living support, community participation, capacity building
65+ years
Must already be an NDIS participant (new applications not accepted)
Continued NDIS support or transition to aged care system

- Acquired brain injury
Important Notice
Your disability must be permanent and significantly impact your daily life. Temporary conditions or those that can be treated are generally not covered.
